Typically you can only make changes to your Medicare plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) each year. Under certain circumstances, though, you are able to make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage outside of the AEP window. These situations qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
What is a Special Enrollment Period?
SEPs are qualifying periods during which you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage, as long as one of a number of certain events happens in your life—for example, if you move or lose coverage suddenly.
With each of these circumstances, you will have a certain amount of time where you are able to figure out what will best fit your new situation and then make changes to your Medicare plan.
What qualifies as a Medicare Special Enrollment Period?
There are a number of situations that allow you to make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage. Keep in mind, however, that every special circumstance is different, and the rules about when you can make changes and the types of changes you can make are different for each one. Here are some of the situations that could qualify you for an SEP:
- Moving
- Retiring
- Losing your current coverage
- Your plan changes its contract with Medicare
- Other special situations
